Travel & waiting

4 things to pack for a screen-free journey with an ADHD child

Journeys combine waiting, noise and unfamiliar routines. Four compact choices can make the bag more useful without filling it with distractions.

Why this moment can feel difficult

Travel asks children to cope with a lot of stopping, starting and waiting in places they cannot control. Packing too much can create its own problem, so we prefer a small choice of familiar activities with different purposes.

One helps with noise, one keeps hands busy, one provides a story and one offers a longer tactile activity. Let the child help choose the bag before leaving so the contents feel familiar rather than like emergency equipment.

1. Take the edge off a noisy environment

Stations, airports and busy cafés can be tiring even before the journey begins. A child who can still hear conversation but experiences less background noise may find it easier to stay connected.

Loop Engage Kids 2 is compact enough for a pocket. Test the fit at home first and carry the case, because a tiny item is easy to lose while travelling.

2. Give busy hands something small

A pocket-sized fidget can be useful during queues, announcements or the part of a journey when getting up is not possible. The best option is usually quiet and already familiar.

The Tangle Jr. Classic is small and has no loose pieces. It can still be dropped, so we keep it in one accessible pocket rather than at the bottom of the bag.

3. Pack a familiar story

Audio can soften a long stretch without introducing another bright screen. Familiar stories are particularly useful because the child already knows what to expect.

The Yoto Mini is portable and can work with headphones where appropriate. Download content before leaving and keep volume at a comfortable level.

4. Include one activity that lasts longer

A tactile activity can fill more time than a simple fidget while still being contained enough for a tray table or café table.

The Pushpeel XL uses colourful silicone strings and a flexible board. Check the size against the travel bag and introduce it beforehand so the child knows how it works.

A useful travel bag does not need endless entertainment. It needs a few familiar options that solve different problems.

Keep it flexible

We would not expect any bag to prevent every difficult moment. Hunger, tiredness, delays and unfamiliar places still matter.

The aim is simply to reduce the number of moments when there is nothing suitable to offer. Four familiar tools can be more useful than a bag full of new surprises.
